But it doesn’t. Not really. At least, not right now. The first day the roads were glossed and damp, clouds shrouding the Olympic Mountains. Descending from blue sky into cloud cover is always unnerving- I’m unsure where the land is and for a moment, I could be anywhere. Then the gear flips down, the plane shakes a bit, and we hit tarmac.
So welcome to Seattle!
Morning seems to come slowly here. Perhaps it’s cloud cover over Elliot Bay that lingers but thus far the grey has cleared away into autumn sun. So wonderful I found myself in sneakers and shorts along the Bert Gilman trail. It winds beside the lake, and I had to pause a moment on the trail- I am here. Here.
I have been walking the streets of Seattle and riding so many buses, and througout it, I no longer look at my phone. It might seem a little thing, but I need to be alone as I walk. I am Here. I have been too long removed from my body, from my place; planning for the next thing and looking forward. But I am Here. There are mountains and a bright silver spread of water and buildings stretching into the sky and trees turning brilliant. I can be Here for a while. And when I am rejoined, I will learn to be alone beside him, together alone, because that’s the only way I think I can make it.
